Release Overview

EV Insights is a dedicated widget carousel tab for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles — answering the questions gas-car widgets never could.

EV shoppers do not just want mileage and Carfax. They want to know: How long does it take to charge at home? What is realistic range after a few years? Is the battery warranty still active? How much would I save vs. gas? EV Insights puts those answers on your VDP — with model-specific AI copy, deterministic calculations, and cited sources shoppers can verify.

The tab appears automatically when Carvia detects a BEV or PHEV from VIN decode and build data. No manual tagging per listing. No custom VDP content to maintain as your EV mix grows.

The Problem We Solved

Merchandising EVs with gas-car widgets leaves the hardest buyer questions unanswered.

Dealers adding Tesla, Hyundai Ioniq, Ford Lightning, and used EV inventory to their lots face a merchandising gap. Standard VDP widgets cover history, valuation, and specs — but EV shoppers ask different questions. Charging time at home vs. on the road. Real-world range after depreciation. Battery warranty transferability. Total cost of ownership vs. a comparable gas SUV.

Gas vs. electric monthly cost

Interactive daily-miles slider (5–150 mi/day) compares estimated monthly fuel cost vs. electricity cost. Supports BEV and PHEV math — PHEV estimates assume most local miles run on electric range. Uses local gas and electricity rate inputs when available; sensible defaults otherwise. USD and CAD supported.

Range

Today's range and 3-year projection

Estimates usable range based on vehicle age, mileage, original EPA range, battery capacity, and climate adjustment. Shows both current miles and a projected three-year outlook. Clearly labeled as an estimate — not a diagnostic battery health test.

Battery warranty

Coverage status and remaining mileage

OEM high-voltage battery warranty limits researched per model year (mileage cap and years). Displays active, expired, or verify status with a progress bar for remaining coverage. AI can supply model-specific warranty terms and source links when available.

Charging speed

Home, public, and fast-charge sessions

Three tabbed scenarios — home Level 2 (240V), local public Level 2, and DC fast charge — each showing 10%–80% charge time, equipment label, power (kW), and estimated session cost. AI enriches with model-specific timing from published OEM/EPA data when available; deterministic fallback uses battery-capacity math.

Buyer fit

Who this EV is right for — and who should think twice

AI-generated fit summary and honest caveat — e.g., home charging access, winter range needs, frequent long trips. Aligned with Carvia's buyer-fit framing: consultative, not alarmist.

Rebates and programs to verify

Cards for federal, state/provincial, and utility programs with eligibility notes and links to authoritative sources (IRS, DOE AFDC, Canada ZEV incentives). Honest about what is and is not available — including that the federal used EV credit is unavailable for 2026 purchases.

How It Works

  1. Vehicle data loads. VIN decode, NMVTIS, and EVD2 build data are fetched for the carousel — same shared retrieval pass as other widgets.
  2. EV detection runs. Powertrain kind (BEV or PHEV) is determined from fuel type, drivetrain, and build attributes. If not electric, the EV Insights tab is hidden.
  3. AI copy is requested. The ai-agent get-ev-insights endpoint researches model-specific charging, warranty, fit, and incentive copy — with web search and structured schema validation.
  4. Deterministic calculations merge. Savings, range, warranty progress, and charging speed are computed from vehicle inputs, market context (ZIP/postal, USD/CAD), and AI-enriched OEM limits. If AI times out or the circuit is open, a full deterministic fallback still renders the widget.
  5. Widget displays in carousel. Shoppers swipe to the EV Insights tab and interact with the daily-miles slider, charging session tabs, and trust tooltips. Valuation and score widgets on the same carousel reference the same vehicle data via the Vehicle Context Engine.
Resilience: EV Insights is designed to always show something useful. AI enriches the experience with model-specific copy and citations; deterministic math ensures the widget never depends solely on a single AI call succeeding.

  • Estimates, not diagnostics — range and battery context are labeled as estimates based on age, mileage, and available data — not a professional battery health test
  • Verify language — warranty and incentive sections use “verify with seller” when start dates or eligibility are unknown
  • Honest incentive policy — federal used EV credit is flagged as unavailable for 2026 purchases; state and utility programs require local verification

Getting Started

  1. Confirm carousel embed is live. EV Insights runs inside the widget carousel — if your VDP embed is current, detection and rendering are already available for electric inventory.
  2. Enable EV Insights visibility. Ask your Carvia account team to confirm EV Insights is enabled in your client carousel configuration.
  3. Verify domain and market context. Register your dealer domain for automatic ZIP/postal resolution — savings and incentive context depend on location.
  4. Spot-check an EV listing. Open a BEV or PHEV on your VDP and swipe to the EV Insights tab. Confirm charging sessions, savings slider, and warranty section render correctly.
  5. Brief your sales team. Point them to the EV tab as the pre-test-drive reference — especially for used EV leads where warranty and range questions come up first.
